Welcome to the Department of Chemistry. The department contributes to the mission of the University in training undergraduate and postgraduate students with requisite skills needed for the industrial development of modern society, the attainment of Vision 20:2020 and the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Current research focus is on the development of drilling and completion fluid chemicals, activated carbon and oil as replacement for olive oil. We offer programmes leading to the award of B.Sc, M.Sc and M.Phil/Ph.D. degrees in Industrial Chemistry. The department is adequately staffed with qualified and experienced faculty and staff to impart students with quality education. Also, there are well-equipped laboratories with the state-of-the-art facilities for hands on training and research activities. Faculty, staff and the department have received several awards including award as the most outstanding department in the University in 2014/2015 academic session.
Prof. Akan B. Williams, the Head, Department of Chemistry is a Professor of Analytical/Environmental Chemistry. He is the immediate past Director, Vice-Chancellor's Office. A former Director, Academic Planning and Dean of Students and Covenant University Orator, he obtained a B.Sc degree in Chemistry from the University of Calabar in 1991; M.Sc degree in Pure and Industrial Chemistry (Petroleum Chemistry) from the University of Port Harcourt in 2001 and a Ph.D in Chemistry (Environmental Chemistry) from Covenant University in 2011. He is a Fellow, Chemical Society of Nigeria; immediate past Chairman, Chemical Society of Nigeria, Ogun State Chapter; member of Institute of Chartered Chemists of Nigeria and member, Royal Society of Chemistry. Prof. Williams’ major research focus is on the monitoring of persistent organic pollutants in the environment. He has supervised many undergraduate and postgraduate projects at Masters and Ph.D levels, and has several publications in scholarly journals and conferences.
